Challenging the Duchy of Cornwall via the Informtion Tribunal. Landmark Ruling 03/11/2011 redefines the Duchy as a Public Body which must reveal environmental information about the Port Navas Oyster Unit.  In December 2011, the Duchy filed to appeal the ruling.

Welcome to the site set up specifically to preserve Port Navas quay and the wider Helford River environment. The website has been established by and with the support of concerned local residents and interested parties from the village of Port Navas who have joined together to form Port Navas Quay Preservation limited (2009) PNQP Ltd.

This website is the true friend of Port Navas and the Helford River area. We will not pretend that all is well when it patently is not so. We will continue to publicise wrongdoing and details of any potential environmental damage. It is of no use just displaying ‘picture postcard’ views of the Helford River on a website.  We have no links with any commercial organisation/group  operating in the Helford and are therefore truly independent.

The success and prosperity of the Helford River area depend upon maintaining its pristine beauty. We wish to help preserve the Helford River area as an Area of Outstanding National Beauty (AONB), as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and the Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) within the Helford.

Who are we?

We are people who have lived here in Port Navas for many, many years.  We have visited Port Navas with our children and grandchildren and have walked on the Quay over these years.  We are all saddened by the current state of the Quay and want to do something about it.  We are all extremely disappointed by the lack of open debate that has taken place on this topic.

What are the facts?

  1. The beauty and physical structure of Grade II listed Port Navas Quay, also part of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), is being damaged by the current Oyster Unit.
  2. The Helford River is a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and has a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) at Tremerlin. Natural England have written to the Oyster Unit regarding potential damage caused to this SSSI - pointing out that any such damage is a criminal offence.
  3. Following Ministerial Orders in 1960 industrial/commercial activity and car parking was prohibited on the Quay.  
  4. The Duchy promised in the 1960s to preserve the Quay for the people of Port Navas.
  5. The Helford River Area is under threat from various developments which have been allowed to go on for too long.  Its commercial value lies in its pristine and unravaged beauty.  We wish to stop greed and neglect ruining the area.  Click here to see other damage which is threatening the wider Helford River Area.

What do we want to achieve from this site?

  1. To raise awareness of the damage that is being caused to both the visual and environmental beauty of Port Navas Quay and the Helford River as a direct result of the Oyster Unit.  Click here to see some recent photographs.
  2. To ensure that everyone has sight of key documents pertaining to this damage (information obtained primarily under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and the Environmental Information Regulations (EIR) ) - stored in one central place.
  3. To provide all local residents and visitors to Port Navas with the key contacts so that you are able to direct your comments and concerns to the right people.
  4. To generate genuine and open dialogue with the Duchy of Cornwall in order to rectify the damage that has been caused.
